After an extremely tight race, it is with heavy hearts that we must concede defeat. The UK has voted to leave the EU, on the highest turnout in a nationwide ballot since 1992.

We feel compelled to address the polarising nature of the leave campaign, a campaign built upon fear-mongering, false promises and a blatant disregard for the facts.

It has brought out the worst in our democracy. Its divisive rhetoric and thinly veiled xenophobia have split our country down the middle. And it has ignited hatred in the heart of our communities.

We now face deep constitutional questions about Scotland, Northern Ireland and Gibraltar. We face an economic crisis. And we face a #brexit agenda that is impossible to implement. Each and every one of us now has a role to play in exposing this doomed agenda.

We must make sure the UK maintains as close a link to the EU as possible. We must bring sanity and academic integrity back to our politics. And we must begin to undo the damage this toxic campaign has wrought upon our nation and the world.

Thank you all for your support.
